Olympics + Social Media

Anyone out there watching the Olympics right now?! I haven't had a chance to turn it on yet, but it is interesting that it coincides with our international studies of social media use. I wonder how much the Olympics play a part in social media use while they are going on? So far on social media I have seen a rise in memes and a significant number of articles on the ridiculous rules and regulations on what women are allowed to wear while competing, the blind and deaf woman not being able to have a helper with her in Tokyo because of Covid restrictions (even though it seems like there are other actually unnecessary people that are allowed to be there), and so many more things that feel crazier than usual this year! Maybe we're all just more connected though.. What do you think?

  1. Hi Abby, love your Olympics graphic – how did you make it? I have not had much time for the Olympics but will catch up after July 30th. I have gotten some news related to the uniform discussions. Never could understand why women volleyball players wore those outfits – it’s a required uniform??? Also wonder how much anxiety goes along with what the gymnasts are wearing. Don’t they have enough to think about?? I do hope this will change. Maybe after this year’s events?

    1. Hey! I found the graphic at Giphy.com. You can search any random thing on there to find fun little gifs. I usually just right click or ctrl click and save to my downloads folder and then upload them as an image! I don't really understand either, I mean, they can totally wear those uniforms if they want to, but I don't know if I would want to. Sand isn't very comfortable to fall on with bare skin. I know gymnasts use that spray glue to keep their leos from riding, but I am all for the team that decided to go with full length unitards this year! As someone who has spent a lot of time in leotards, I would much prefer to have something in addition to just that. I'm hoping after all of this media attention they will at least change the rules to allow competitors a little bit more freedom in the future!

  2. Hi Abby, I am following the olympics every now and then. I was just watching a swimming heat and a table tennis match between Austria and Singapore. Women and their outfit have always been a constant focal point on social media and it always frustrates me because is that all people care about? What about their sportsmanship? Talent? Hardwork? Well, at least I am hopeful that we have progressed as a society.

    1. I am hopeful to get to watch some Olympics as we finish up assignments this week! Yeah.. I see what you are saying! It can be frustrating when it seems like that's the only thing people care about. I am all for their sportsmanship, talent, and hard work as long as they feel comfortable and confident in what they are wearing and not feeling like they are being objectified for their bodies in the process! I am hopeful as well that we can progress past this and let women have a choice to wear protective clothing (If they want to! No problem in them keeping bikinis and leos if they still want to wear that.)
